Kids sermon notes

These kid’s sermon notes free printables help kids learn to listen and pay attention to the pastor and the sermon, and we all need help with that, right? I don’t know about you, but I’m a visual learner so taking notes helps me stay engaged with the pastor and listen better. Taking notes also helps me later when I’m studying a passage and can look back over the notes.

What about Children’s Church?

Don’t get me wrong, Children’s Church is great. I’ve taught in Children’s Church for many years. Kids need music that they enjoy, lessons on their level, and time and space to play and wiggle. Children’s Church meets those needs. But I also think kids should be in the adult service occasionally. How else are they going to learn about deeper topics, more meaningful worship, the ordinances of the church, and how to go to church when they grow up? I think it’s very important for kids to see their parents worship, listen, and participate in the service.

It’s also important for kids to see first hand their parents giving offering, taking communion, and seeing others get baptized. It often causes them to ask questions, opening the door for parents to have meaningful conversations with their kids about why we do these things and when they can participate in them.

I know all churches have a different schedule and order of service and programming for kids. Our church has the kids come into the worship service for the song service at the beginning then they’re dismissed for Children’s Church. When there’s a 5th Sunday, kids stay in the service the whole time, there’s no Children’s Church. No matter how your church organizes the worship service and kids programs, it’s important for kids to be in the adult service occasionally.

Why do kids need to take sermon notes?

Like I said, taking notes can help keep kids stay focused and engaged and can help them learn the structure of a church service. These kid’s sermon notes free printables are organized in a way to encourage kids to watch and listen for specific parts of the service. During the music service, kids can choose their favorite song and write the title or draw a picture of it in the box. There’s a place for them to write the scripture reference the pastor preaches from that day. There’s also a box for kids to draw a picture of the sermon. They can write questions they have or things they didn’t understand and their favorite part of the service. There are 5 different pages with different pictures kids can color. Sometimes, we need to keep our hands busy to help us listen better.

Taking notes helps kids learn early how to listen to a sermon. I don’t know about you, but I was well into my adult years before I truly learned to pay attention to and really listen to what the pastor was saying and taking notes is what helped me learn that.

Bible Study Materials

Kids will be more excited about participating in the service when they have fun Bible study materials they can use. Having a “real” Bible so they can read and follow along is very helpful and helps kids feel more grown up. This ESV Children’s Bible is one of my favorites. It’s a complete Bible with beautiful illustrations and a topical index. The NIV Adventure Bible is another favorite. It has colorful illustrations, fun facts, and ways to put the Bible into practice in real life.

Highlighting important information is a good study skill in any subject area and is a good practice in Bible study too. Most Bible pages are so thin a regular highlighter will bleed through but these Bible highlighters are specially made not to bleed through or smear. Kid’s Bibles are usually more durable but these would still work better. They could also be used to color or draw the pictures on the sermon notes pages.

Your kids will also need something to draw and color with. Crayons will melt and make a mess if left in the car in the summer. These colored pencils will work great for drawing and coloring and won’t melt if left in the car. We all have that one cup holder in the back full of melted crayon, right?

With all those things to keep up with, your child will need a bag to keep it all contained. That way they can be responsible for their own things and they don’t end up in your bag, or hands! This bag from Amazon is great because it can hold the Bible and sermon notes and has several pockets for highlighters, colored pencils, and other items. It comes in cute colors for boys and girls.
